Thee Black Card

I heard her voice long before I met her! Sarah Jené and my best friend were background singers for Sarah’s sister’s play. At the time, I did not know we would collaborate on various projects. All I knew was that she has a beautiful voice.

Fast forward to 2015ish and Sarah styled a project called Black In Bloom. Everything from the published photos to the launch party was so ethereal and elegant. It was probably in these moments that I knew I wanted to work with her.

In 2017, I sought out Sarah to style my “Nature’s Bookstore” shoot. My intention was to capture the beauty of literature and her pieces complemented the theme. Since then, she has styled more shoots for me in addition to her own projects. It has been a joy to witness her growth and evolution.

Most recently, Sarah created Thee Black Card to continue the loving exchange of greeting cards. She draws inspiration from vintage Black publications such as JET magazine and ads that highlight and celebrate the beauty of Blackness. The signature cards are upcycled from pre-existing cards. Since its’ birth, Sarah has expanded her offerings to include paper collages as well as digital artwork and commission projects.

Most recently, she collaborated with Ladies’ Night Lifestyles to create stylish greeting cards that are included as a gift with each purchase. Thee Black Card celebrates Black culture with a handmade touch and is available on Etsy.
